A Different Backdrop for Nocturnal Survey Work

A recent evening on site gave us a slightly different backdrop from some of our usual survey locations, and a welcome change of scenery while supporting nocturnal ecology work.

At Redwood Integrity Group Ltd, our Aerial Thermal Roost Monitoring (ATRM) service is designed to support ecology teams with Thermal-led drone capture for bat emergence monitoring, PRF screening and suitability assessment.

During emergence-season work, ATRM can provide time-stamped nocturnal Thermal and visual capture across multiple potential roost features from a consistent aerial viewpoint. This can be particularly useful where rooflines, elevations or access constraints make ground-based monitoring more challenging.

It can also help reduce reliance on large numbers of ground-based cameras, supporting more efficient setup, review and reporting.

The key point is that ATRM is there to support the ecology workflow, not replace it. We provide the aerial capture and structured evidence pack, while ecological interpretation and assessment remain with the consultant team.

Outside the main emergence season, the same approach can also support PRF screening, building suitability grading and future survey planning. This makes ATRM useful both during peak survey windows and as a planning tool ahead of them.

Every site is different, so the scope is agreed in advance around the survey objective, target buildings or PRFs, and required deliverables. Outputs can include key stills, clips, annotated PRFs and optional mapped overlays, depending on what the ecology team needs for review and reporting.

For ecology teams working across complex buildings, constrained access, or multi-PRF sites, ATRM can provide another practical layer of evidence to support survey planning, monitoring and reporting.
